COMMUNICATIONS PAGE

Welcome to our Communications Area. This page is designed to give you a good idea as to who the DMI are and precisely what it hopes to achieve. As well as the detail below you will also find links to presentations we have give to the County Councils, press releases and press coverage on the DMI. There is also a twenty page document outlining the DMI vision in detail which you can download and print off.

Mission Statement
The aim of the Dublin Mountains  Initiative is to foster the creation of an integrated development and management policy for the Dublin Mountains.

Our Vision
There are very few capital cities in the world where the mountains are within such easy striking distance of those who live there.  Dublin, as we all know, is becoming increasingly urbanized and increasingly congested.  The Dublin Mountains will become increasingly important as an escape and release from the pressures of urban living.  Currently the Dublin Mountains are only marginally developed for recreational use – for example only about 10% of walking trails in Ireland are in the Greater Dublin Area.

There are huge social, health and economic benefits to be gained from proper development of upland trails and it is this that we would like to see happen over the next few years.  These trails would primarily be for casual and family users but there would also be areas for specialist users, the disabled and for educational purposes.  Some trails would be for single use only  - others would be shared with appropiate rules of conduct.  All trails would be marked and colour coded.  There would also be full provision of associated facilities and a ranger programme.  And finally the park would be properly marketed with information leaflets, educational packs and a dedicated website.

For all this to succeed there needs to be a unified development and management policy for the whole of the Dublin Mountains.  It is this that the Dublin Mountains Initiative aims to have put in place.
